Pendant speakers for open ceilings

Pendant speakers hang below an open ceiling, bringing the sound source closer to the listening area without requiring a recessed cutout. They are worth considering for exposed-structure restaurants, shops and shared spaces where appearance and coverage both matter.

Choose the mounting first, then the connection“Pendant” or “hanging” describes the installation style. You still need to choose between a compatible passive amplifier system and a networked speaker. A pendant does not automatically include an amplifier or accept Ethernet audio.

1. Pendant or recessed ceiling speaker?

Consideration Pendant / hanging Recessed ceiling
Ceiling structure Can hang from suitable structural attachment points below an exposed ceiling. Needs a suitable ceiling surface, cutout and enough cavity space.
Appearance The enclosure and suspension remain visible; shape and finish are part of the room. A grille sits at the ceiling surface for a more discreet finish.
Coverage planning Choose the final hanging height and spacing relative to listeners. Plan from the fixed ceiling height, speaker pattern and occupied area.

A pendant can be lowered toward the listening plane, but the right drop length is a design decision. A speaker that hangs too low can be intrusive or leave uneven coverage. Coordinate the layout with lighting, beams, ducts and the way people use the room.

2. Match the speaker to the system

  • For 70V distributed audio: confirm that the exact pendant has a compatible transformer and the required taps. Add its selected tap to the amplifier’s total load. The commercial 70V guide walks through a sizing example.
  • For low-impedance audio: check impedance and the amplifier’s permitted load. Multiple speakers connected to one channel change the load; do not assume unlimited daisy chaining.
  • For Dante: choose a network-enabled model and check both audio routing and power. The Dante and PoE guide explains the source, switch and setup requirements.

3. Compare these pendant formats

  • SoundTube RS62-EZ-WH — a white pendant with a 6.5-inch driver. Compare the technical sheet and mounting kit against your music or paging layout.
  • SoundTube DS31-EZ-CS-SL — a designer pendant package with a silver cylindrical sleeve, mounting bracket and grille. Check package contents carefully when comparing it with sleeve-only accessories.

4. Check the complete installation

  • Suspension: verify suitable structural attachment, speaker weight, drop length, specified hanging hardware and secondary support requirements in the installation manual. Speaker cable is not a substitute for the specified suspension.
  • Coverage: work from the finished hanging height and manufacturer coverage data. A seating plan and ceiling drawing are more useful than a speaker count based only on square footage.
  • Environment: confirm the exact model’s rating and installation limits for patios, moisture or other exposure. A pendant shape alone does not establish outdoor suitability.
  • Bass: decide whether the system needs a separate subwoofer. Compare frequency response and intended listening level instead of relying on driver diameter alone.
  • Order contents: distinguish a complete speaker from a grille, sleeve, bracket or other accessory. Confirm finish and the number of physical speakers in each listing.

Common pendant-speaker questions

How many pendant speakers does a restaurant need?

The answer depends on the room layout, finished hanging height, speaker coverage, background noise and target level. Supply a floor plan with seating and ceiling details so the layout can be checked before choosing a quantity.

Does a lower hanging height always improve the sound?

No. Lowering a speaker changes both its distance to listeners and its coverage footprint. The best height balances even coverage, physical clearance and the room’s appearance.

Can a pendant speaker use Dante and PoE?

Some can. For example, SoundTube offers dedicated IPD networked pendant models. A similar-looking passive model has different connection requirements, so verify the full model number. See the manufacturer’s IPD-RS62-EZ-WH description for an example of the networked design.
